ASC Capstone Project

As part of my ASC Scholarship Capstone Project, I am planning an art project with 26 fourth-grade students at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic School on Monday, September 14th. The project is called “All About Me” and is designed to give students an opportunity to express their individuality, creativity, interests, and personalities through art.

For this project, I will provide each of the 26 students with a magazine and have them search for pictures, words, colors, and other images that represent who they are and what they enjoy. The students will cut out their chosen items and use them to create a personal collage that represents different parts of their identity. In addition to the magazines, I will provide construction paper, cardstock, stickers, glue, scissors, buttons, googly eyes, jewels, and yarn. I plan to purchase these supplies at Hobby Lobby on Saturday, September 12th.

Having a variety of art supplies available is important because it will allow each student to make their project unique. Every student has different interests, personalities, and experiences, so providing multiple types of materials gives them more opportunities to creatively express themselves. Some students may choose to use stickers and jewels, while others may prefer yarn, buttons, or googly eyes to add details to their collage. I want each student to have the freedom to make their project their own rather than having every student create the same finished product.

This activity also provides educational and social-emotional benefits. It encourages students to think about what makes them unique, recognize their individual strengths and interests, and share a little about themselves with their classmates. It can also help build confidence and encourage students to appreciate the differences and similarities they have with one another. The activity is intended to create a positive and welcoming environment where students can express themselves in a fun, creative, and age-appropriate way.

As part of my ASC Scholarship Capstone Project, I will be able to engage directly with the fourth-grade students while providing them with a meaningful, hands-on activity. This project allows me to fulfill my service commitment while giving back to the school and students in a way that is engaging and beneficial to them. I will take responsibility for preparing the materials, explaining the activity, assisting students throughout the project, and helping with cleanup afterward.

The project will also provide the classroom teachers with an opportunity to step away from their normal classroom responsibilities and have some time to relax while the students participate in a structured and purposeful activity. I hope this gives the teachers a chance to recharge while knowing their students are engaged in a creative learning experience.

Funding for this project would allow me to purchase the supplies needed for all 26 students to participate fully. The additional materials will provide students with more choices and allow them to be creative in their own way. My goal through my ASC Scholarship Capstone Project is to create an enjoyable and memorable experience for the students while encouraging creativity, self-expression, confidence, and positive classroom relationships. I am grateful for the opportunity to complete this project and use my capstone experience to make a positive impact on the students and their classroom.
