Bike Racks for Campus
Executive Cabinet Recommendation
Approval with amendment
Bill Reads
Whereas, Newman University has one bike rack on campus. Students who bike to class, to work, or between buildings have nowhere to lock up at most of the places they need to go, so bikes end up locked to railings and trees.
Whereas, bike locks allow people to lock their bikes on campus and thus increase safety from theft. Students are also then allowed to bike to campus. Riding a bike is more environmentally friendly.
Whereas, the racks will go where students already need them: pictures and locations attached. Two racks at each location. Newman maintenance has not been asked, and so SGA will need to communicate with them and request their services.
Whereas, the rack chosen is the inverted U, the design the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals recommends. It holds two bikes each, supports the frame at two points so a bike cannot fall over, and lets a rider lock the frame and a wheel with one U-lock. Wave and comb racks were not chosen: they advertise more spaces than they actually hold, and a bike parked in them is supported at only one point.
Whereas, three alternatives were priced and not chosen. Belson's in-ground inverted U costs less at $139.00 per rack ($834.00 for 6), but it has to be set in new concrete rather than bolted to existing concrete, which makes installation much more work for maintenance. Belson's stainless steel inverted U lasts longer at $459.00 per rack ($2,754.00 for 6), nearly three times the cost for the same twelve spaces.
Whereas, the total will come to $990.00, but $1,100.00 is being requested (to cover the concrete anchors the racks mount with, if maintenance does not already stock them, and any change in price at the time of purchase) to purchase the following:
