Financial Report
President Arguijo presented.
The university allocation for the semester is $49,364.59, of which $32,892.00 is spent or committed and $16,623.89 is available: $11,623.89 in the operating budget and $5,000.00 in the leadership fund, none of which has been spent.
Bill 2625, the homecoming tailgate, was spent under its allocation, and $57.43 has been returned to the operating budget. Bill 2624 returned $38.02.
Business
Bill 2627
Jonah, a first-year seminarian, presented as the bill's author, with Secretary Morgan. The purpose of the bill is to buy six inverted U bike racks, two at each of three locations, for 12 bike spaces. The racks bolt into existing concrete. They cost $330.00 per pack of two, $990.00 for three packs, and the bill asks for $1,100.00 to cover concrete anchors and any change in price.
The proposed locations were Eck Hall, Sacred Heart Hall and DeMattias Hall. Jonah gave as reasons that biking is environmentally friendly, that it serves students who cannot afford a car or gas, that electric bikes are becoming more common, and exercise.
Senator Masem asked whether there are bike racks on campus already. Jonah said there are two: one between the freshman residence halls, and one at Eck Hall with three or four spaces, which is old and too low to lock a bike's frame to.
PR Chair Nunez asked whether there is a bike rack in front of the library. Jonah said there is not, and that the senate knows better than he does where students would use racks. PR Chair Nunez said the proposed locations are good, but students go to the library often, so racks there would be useful.
Senator Do asked whether Jonah knows of others who bike. Jonah said few students bike on campus now, possibly because there is nowhere to lock a bike; the seminarians he has spoken with would use the racks; and use may grow from the next school year, once students choose how they get to campus. Bikes are now locked to poles and to the sculpture by DeMattias Hall.
Senator Ju asked whether Jonah would install the racks. Secretary Morgan said he spoke with Grant in maintenance that morning: once SGA has the racks, a work order is submitted and maintenance installs them. Jonah added that the racks should be 36 inches apart and perpendicular to the building.
President Arguijo said the bill can be amended, for example to buy two racks first and add more later, and the locations do not have to be settled until the racks are ordered.
Location
Senator Masem said one location should be in front of the library, in place of either Sacred Heart Hall, which is in the center of campus, or Eck Hall, which already has a rack.
Senator Ju said she prefers the library, since bikes at Sacred Heart Hall would be ridden through the center of campus among people walking. Senator Do shared the concern about Sacred Heart Hall.
Jonah agreed that the sidewalks to Sacred Heart Hall are narrow and called it the weakest of the three locations. The library has wide sidewalks and is on the edge of campus.
PR Chair Nunez said the library would be the better location.
Senator Do motioned to amend the bill to move the Sacred Heart Hall racks to the library and keep the Eck Hall and DeMattias Hall locations, and Senator Masem seconded.
Voting on the amendment via roll call (including online votes), 11 for, 0 against, 0 abstain, 2 no ballot: Senator Do for, Chief Justice Edwards no ballot, Senator Gonzalez for, Senator Johnston for, Senator Ju for, Senator (Phena) Kayode for, Senator (Phosa) Kayode no ballot, Senator Landry for, Senator Masem for, Senator Nguyen for, PR Chair Nunez for, Senator Ortiz for, Senator Sherman for.
The amendment has passed.
The roll call in the room was taken as a single vote, so the same ballots were recorded for final passage of the bill as amended.
Voting on final passage via roll call (including online votes), 11 for, 0 against, 0 abstain, 2 no ballot: Senator Do for, Chief Justice Edwards no ballot, Senator Gonzalez for, Senator Johnston for, Senator Ju for, Senator (Phena) Kayode for, Senator (Phosa) Kayode no ballot, Senator Landry for, Senator Masem for, Senator Nguyen for, PR Chair Nunez for, Senator Ortiz for, Senator Sherman for.
Bill 2627 has passed as amended.
Call to audience
Chad Fletcher, the new Director of Security, introduced himself. He retired from law enforcement after 32 years, 14 of them as a school resource officer. He invited students to stop by his office and to tell him of anything his office can do for them.
Jonah thanked the senate and Secretary Morgan. Secretary Morgan said the credit also goes to the Security and Grounds Committee, which had discussed the bill at length.
Sister Fran attended for her monthly visit and brought a contribution for the Jet Resource Hub. She asked members to speak louder.
Committee Information and Updates
Constitution
President Arguijo will email the committee today. She wants the constitution fixed by the next meeting so it can be voted on. The changes include the wording for Chief Justice and the budget: whether to continue the scholarships or put the money toward graduation fees.
Ethics
The committee may meet soon. President Arguijo will email dates and times today.
Clubs
Vice President Keeling said Letters of Love has passed, and she has emailed its officers. She will contact Dean Chambers about what else is needed to make the club official and get it funding.
Another student is interested in starting a film club. Vice President Keeling has emailed him to see whether he is still interested.
Members' schedules make a common meeting time difficult, so the committee may meet in two groups or on Zoom. Vice President Keeling asked for suggestions in the group chat.
Security and Grounds
Secretary Morgan said the committee meets next Monday at 7:00 p.m. and will keep working on its research items.
Jet Resource Hub
President Arguijo said the food drive with Sister Therese is under way. The last day to contribute is October 15, the day before fall break. Donation boxes are in Sacred Heart Hall and Eck Hall; no more boxes could be found, which could be the subject of a future bill.
Once the boxes are filled and a restock bill is done, SGA will move forward with Chick-fil-A to promote the Jet Resource Hub.
Advisor Updates
Dean Chambers was in a meeting and had no update.
Executive Updates
President Arguijo said Chief Justice Edwards will become Treasurer, replacing Treasurer Hertel, after the next meeting. The senate will vote on a new Chief Justice next week. Anyone who wants the position should tell the executive team, preferably this week.
President Arguijo asked members to tell the executive team if online voting is not open, so that they are not counted absent, and to report any mistakes in the meeting slides.
Vice President Keeling and Secretary Morgan had no updates.
New Business
Senator Do said CAB is putting on Field of Screams, and sign-ups are open.
President Arguijo will present a bill next week for an ASC capstone.
Adjournment
Before adjournment, the week's events were announced: men's golf and Chasing Shadows at 8:00 p.m. on Monday; volleyball on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.; on Friday volleyball at 4:00 p.m. and women's soccer's One Big Game at 7:00 p.m.; Campus Ministry's Cor ad Cor from Friday to Sunday; men's and women's bowling on Saturday and Sunday; and on Saturday men's soccer at 12:00 p.m. and volleyball at 3:00 p.m. President Arguijo asked members to support the athletic events and take pictures to share with the student body.
